Cerebral Blood Flow and Metabolism Studies Comparing Krypton 85 Desaturation Technique With Argon Desaturation Technique Using the Mass Spectrometer • Average cerebral blood flow determinations were performed 26 times comparing argon desaturation curves measured by mass spectrometry to the krypton 85 desaturation technique of McHenry. During 17 of these studies krypton 85 and argon desaturations were performed simultaneously. Mean cerebral blood flow difference was 7.2 ± 5.7% for simultaneous determinations and 7.9 ± 6.6% for the total, establishing that the two techniques are comparable. Some of the advantages of using argon in mass spectrometry include: no blood needs to be withdrawn, curves can be observed at the time they are obtained, radiation precautions are not required, multiple studies do not affect the patient, and partial pressures of oxygen and carbon dioxide can be observed constantly. Cerebral Blood Flow Determined by Saturation and Desaturation with Krypton-85: an Evaluation of the Validity of the Inert Gas; Method of Kety and Schmidt.

• In the original inert gas method of Kety and Schmidt the saturation of the brain with the inert gas, N,,O, is followed for 10 minutes. In a group of subjects we have studied both the saturation and the desaturation of the brain with krypton as the inert gas. The results give an experimental demonstration of a relatively small systematic error inherent in the method apparently due to differenc...

Measurement of Local Blood Flow with Hydrogen Gas.

• The use of inert gases was introduced for measuring cerebral blood flow by Kety and Schmidt in 1945* and has since found wide application to the brain and other regions. Nitrous oxide has been used for measuring cerebral, myocardial, and renal blood flow," while labelled krypton has been used for the same organs by other investigators." The method requires simultaneous measurement of the gas ...

Global ischemia in dogs: intracranial pressures, brain blood flow and metabolism.

Global Ischemia in Dogs: Intracranial Pressures, Brain Blood Flow and Metabolism • Our earlier studies showed no secondary postischemic (PI) rise in cisterna magna pressure (CMP) for ten hours and no significant reduction in CBF (integrated N,O desaturation technique) for three and one-half hours after 15 minutes of systemic circulatory arrest. However, transtentorial pressure gradients may hav...

Jugular venous desaturation and outcome after head injury.

Early experience with continuous monitoring of jugular venous oxygen saturation (SjvO2) suggested that this technology might allow early identification of global cerebral ischaemia in patients with severe head injury. The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between episodes of jugular venous desaturation and neurological outcome. One hundred and sixteen severely head-in...

A Method for the Continuous Measurement of Cerebral Blood Flow in Man by Means of Radioactive Krypton

The measurement of cerebral blood flow by means of the nitrous oxide method of Kety and Schmidt (1) or the krypton-85 (Kr85) technique of Lassen and Munck (2) requires a steady state of at least ten minutes, for it is not until the end of such a period that the uptake of the gas by the brain can be estimated indirectly from its concentration in cerebral venous blood. These methods are, therefor...
